ISLAMIC DISCOURSES
Allah is Enough
By Maulana Abdul Salaam
As we go through this life of ours, this earthly journey, we are faced from time to time, with problematic situations, especially as an inviter to Islam and especially when one wants to follow Rasoolullah (saws).
Such a person has to have a lot of patience because he is going to face a lot of opposition, in a similar manner as our Prophet (saws) also received a lot of opposition. We will face enemies, and people are going to become our enemies. However our biggest enemy is Shaitaan, and Shaitaan has his friends from the human beings and from the Jinnah.
We are going to face people who will be jealous of us, people who will envy us. We are going to face the people of magic who will try to bewitch us, to work their evil magic on us. We will even be faced with killings/assassinations. We’ll be faced with poverty sometimes, hardship, difficulties.
In summary we are going to be faced with problems from time to time, problematic situations as well as difficulties.
However, blessed is that one who develops the attitude of the best companions that any Nabi could ever possess, and that is, the Sahaabahs, the Companions of the Prophet (saws).
Blessed is that one who Allah, The giver of Tawfeeq, gives tawfeeq to act, to think, and to behave like the companions of the Nabi (saws).
In other words, we must always remember that Allah is enough for us.
For us to say Allah is enough and he is the best Wakeel, that is He is the best one to en-charge your affairs to, for us to say this verbally, to believe in it, and to have certainty in it, then such a person will be successful in this life and the next life. Such a person does not become afraid of his enemies. He does not become afraid of the people who are the envious ones. He does not become afraid of those people who intend to harm him with their evil schemes. He is not afraid of any situation that comes to him because he has Allah with him.
Allah (SWT) says in the Quraan:
"Isn’t Allah sufficient for His servant?"
If Allah’s help comes to you, do you need any other person’s help?
If Allah’s mercy comes to you, it isn’t enough?
If Allah gives you knowledge, it is enough.
If Allah protects you, His protection is the best.
If Allah blesses you, His blessings are the best.
The whole world can come together, but if Allah decides to protect you and bless you and shelter you, then none and nothing can harm you.
Allah announces this in the Quraan when He says
"Isn’t Allah sufficient for His servant?"
If you have Allah, then who do you need after Allah?
No one….
To understand this, lets go back to the blessed days of Madina…. to the battle of Uhud, mentioned in Surah Ali ‘Imraan.
The battle of Uhud was a battle in which the Muslims were gaining victory at first, but then they suffered defeat, due to many reasons. There was a lot of wisdom in their defeat. Allah (SAW) mentioned in the Quraan that this was in order to test the believers, to see who were the hypocrites, and who were the sincere ones, in order to give some martyrdom over others. So even in that defeat, there was success.
Regardless of this, in Uhud, there was chaos, there was confusion. The ranks were broken. Muslims were trapped in the middle with the enemies in front of them and behind them. They heard the rumor that Rasool (saws) had been, killed, and this caused more confusion. It was a time of survival. At the end of it all, Rasool (saws) retreated with his companions to the hilltop, and they were badly wounded. Seventy (70) of the Companions were killed, amongst them was Hazrat Hamzah (R.A), and Musab Ibn Umair (R.A). Those companions who survived tended to their wounds.
They suffered heavy losses all because of a disobedience to the command of the Rasool (saws) by the archers on the hill. They did not intend to disobey him intentionally, they deduced certain things and they made their own analogy, their own intellect, their own inference, but their disobedience was not deliberate.
That was not their desire to do so.
So that was their condition. The companions of Muhammad (saws). 70 of them were killed, of them, including Hamzah (RA), the blessed uncle of the Prophet (SAWS), Mus’ab Inb Umair, and so many others. Many of the Sahaabahs were wounded, blood flowing profusely from their wounds.
The battle of Uhud took place on a Saturday in the month of Shawal, in the 3rd year after the Hijrah, just after Ramadhaan.
Abu Sufyaan intended to return to the battlefield, on the day following the battle of Uhud, on Sunday, to finish the Prophet (saws) and his Companions, to wipe them out. Now was the time to strike the blow. They were injured, wounded, so they thought… let us return and wipe them all out. Let us take revenge for what they have done to us in Badr.
Allah revealed verses concerning that incident.
"Those who answered Allah and the Rasool of Allah when He called for His companions after injury had afflicted them."
Rasool (saws) heard of Abu Sufyaan’s intention to return to the battle field and to finish off everyone, to wipe them out. Despite the fact that the Sahaabahs were tending to their wounds, they had suffered heavy losses and they were injured, Rasool (saws) called out to them, making the dua to return in the path of Allah, to return to the battlefield just as they were, wounded and exhausted, return and face Abu Sufyaan and the enemies.
This would take place at Hamraa ul Asad. In fact in these aayahs, 3 expeditions are being spoken about, One of them is the battle of Uhud which took place on a Saturday in the month of Shawaal in the 3rd year after Hijrah. The second battle is on the 2nd day of Uhud which is on the Sunday, to meet Abu Sufyaan. This Ghazwah and battle is known as Hamraa ul Asad. And there is a third battle which was to take place the next year.
However, Abu Sufyaan decided not to meet the Muslims that year. Therefore when he was leaving Uhud, he told the Prophet (saws):
"Oh Muhammad your appointed time and place for us to meet again would be the day of the season of Badr."
There used to be a great market at Badr. So he told him that next year, one year from this date of Uhud, they would meet again in the market during the season of Badr if they so wish.
Rasool (saws) answered him and said we will not back down, if that is what you want, we will meet you there.
So the first part of the aayah:
"Those who answered Allah and the Rasool of Allah when He called for His companions after injury had afflicted them."
In other words, the companions did not hesitate to go out in Jihaad and face Abu Sufyaan at Hamraa ul Asad even though their wounds were still fresh and they were in such an afflicted condition. They were ready to return in the cause of Allah (SWT).
For those who did well from amongst them by obeying Allah (SWT) and His Rasool (SAW), those who feared Allah by not opposing His Rasool (SAW), nor by going against the commands of Allah and the commands of the Rasool, for them will be a great reward…..For them will be Jannah.
However, since Abu Sufyaan did not return, the battle of Hamraa ul Asad did not take place. The Companions were ready to go out with their wounds, just as they were, but Abu Sufyaan decided to leave and he said:
‘Oh Muhammad, your appointed place and time will be next year in the markets of Badr at the time of the season of trading in Badr. We will meet again next year if you want. Then Rasool (saws) said ‘‘Inshaa Allah’.
The following year now arrived, which was the 4th year after Hijrah in the month of Shabaan. Abu Sufyaan came out from Makkah, remembering his promise to the Prophet (SAW). He came out from Makkah with the people of Makkah. The army alighted at Mara Dhahraan. While camping there, Allah put fear and fright in the heart of Abu Sufyaan who became terrified and scared. He did not want to go out again to the markets of Badr in order to face the Prophet and his companions.
Allah had put such fear in his heart. He met a person called Nu’aim Ibn Mas’ood Al Ashjaee, who was not yet a Muslim, He was still kaafir at that time.
Nu’aim Ibn Mas’ood Al Ashjaee made Hijrah after the battle of Khandaq and became a Muslim later on, but at that time he was a kaafir. He had just performed Umrah, and was returning form Makkah when he met Abu Sufyaan at Mara Dhahraan with his companions.
Abu Sufyaan was scared to face the believers, fear was in his heart.
He told Nu’aim Ibn Mas’ood Al Ashjaee to go to Madina and tell the Muslims that we have amassed a great huge army for them, so don’t come out otherwise they will be wiped out. He instructed him to go and give them this news, deter them, discourage them from coming out. He instructed him to go and tell them and he will be granted 10 camels as his reward.
Nu’aim accepted that offer and Allah refers to this incident when He said:
‘Those to whom the people said to them: "Indeed the people have gathered for you a great gathering."’
Nu'aim Ibn Masood Al Ashjaee, as was instructed by Abu Sufyaan, came to Madina and found the companions and the Prophet (saws) equipping themselves for battle and preparing their horses in order to ride out. He said:
"Where are you people going! Indeed, the people have gathered for you, a great gathering, a huge army, they will wipe you out, so please don’t go. Don’t leave Madina"
However this was all because Abu Sufyaan was in fact, too scared to face them. This was a problematic situation, it was a difficult situation. However that statement of Nu’aim Ibn Masood that the people have amassed a great army to wipe you out…..
What did that statement do to the companions of the Prophet (saws)?
How did they react?
That statement of Nu’aim, only increased them in Imaan. Their strength was in Allah.
Their strength was only in Allah. That statement of Nu’aim; instead of discouraging them and deferring them, it only served to increased them in Imaan.
And they said:
"Allah is enough for us and He is the best Wakeel."
In other words, Allah’s help is enough for us. Allah’s mercy is enough for us. Allah protection is enough for us. The King of kings is enough for us. He is the best one to entrust affairs to. He is the best caretaker of affairs.
Blessed is that person whom, when he is encountered with any problematic situation and difficulty, Allah gives him the tawfeeq / ability to turn to Allah.
Blessed is that one who is given tawfeeq by Allah that when he faces problems and difficulties, whether it is that of an enemy, that of an army, of a whole country, of those people who are envious of you, of magic, whatever type of problem or calamity or disaster, he turns to Allah, his heart goes back to Allah, and he remembers the incident of the small battle of Badr, which would have taken place in the 4th year of the Hijrah in the time of the season of Badr, when they were discouraged, from going out of Madina, but they proceeded and mounted their horses and went forth in the path of Allah saying.
‘Our Allah is enough for us, and He is the best undertaker of our affairs.’
They went in the 4th year of Hijrah, as promised to the markets of Badr. Abu Sufyaan did not come out. He did not leave Marra Dhahraan. But he returned to Mecca scared. The companions went and they had with them some merchandise. They did not see the enemy. Abu Sufyaan and his companions had been gripped with fear so they ran away. So the companions of the Prophet (saws) sold their merchandise, and they got a huge profit. They got benefit from that by the Grace of Allah. So Allah says:
‘So they returned with a great gift from Allah.’
And that gift was that they returned safely and soundly without a drop of blood being spilt. They returned safe and sound.
‘And (they returned) with a bounty (of Allah.)’
What was the bounty?
It was a great profit which they had obtained from selling whatever merchandise they had with them.
So spiritually as well as physically, they returned in a better way, with gifts, with safety from their enemy, with peace of mind and with physical wealth as well.
‘(They returned in such a state that)…. no worry, no anxiety afflicted them.’
No evil afflicted them, not even a drop of blood was shed.
‘And they followed / and they sought the pleasure of Allah.’
When Rasool (saws) said: "We have to go out and face them at the markets of Badr. And Nu’aim was saying: "Don’t go, they have too great an army!"
They were not discourage them. They obeyed Allah. They sought the pleasure of Allah and His Rasool. They were prepared to go out in the path of Allah for battle.
‘And Allah is the one who is full of great favours.’
He has plenty of bounties which He wants to bestow. If only we are worthy enough to receive them.
‘That was only the Shaitaan trying to make you fear his friends.’
That was just Shaitaan trying to make the Muslims afraid. The friends of the Shaitaan refer to the Kuffars, to Abu Sufyaan and his companions who were trying to make the believers afraid.
‘So do not fear them, and fear Me if you are truly believers.’
So blessed is that one who, as he goes through life and faces problematic situations, he remembers the statement of Allah.
‘Isn’t Allah sufficient for His servant.’
Isn’t Allah sufficient for you?
It is a simple Aayah, which everyone can memorize, in order that he should live with it for life.
‘Isn’t Allah enough for His servant?’
Remember the incident at the Battle of Uhud, at Hamraa ul Asad, remember the incident at the small battle of Badr when the companions, faced with these heavy odds, were threatened…. when they were fresh with blood, yet they still went forth in the path of Allah. Leaving Madina, going forth, even though they were threatened, and warned by Nu’aim of such a huge great army to wipe them out, but they still went ahead and they said:
‘Allah is enough for us and He is the best caretaker of affairs.’
With this Inshaa Allah, we too can go through life. This will build and strengthen our Imaan.
We need to teach this to our students and children in order for this Imaan to become ingrained into us, Inshaa Allah.
Just remember that Allah is there for us. His protection is enough. His help is enough. His mercy is enough.
At the end of it all, as we have learnt from our teachers, we need to practice upon this and teach it to our students, our children, our family members and to the whole of mankind.
So do not worry, Be not afraid. Don’t be scared of any situation or problem. Allah says:
‘Don’t fear them, but fear Me.’
Fear Allah alone because Allah is the Greatest. Allahu Akbar.
