FATWA
Meaning of Taghut.
Q. What does Taghut means? How many Taghut are there and who are their leaders?
A. The word Taghut comes in approximately eight different places in the Holy Quraan. Based on the context in which it is used the meaning given to each in different verses may vary and differ. In some of these verses the word Taghut refers to satan, satanic paths, followers of satan, judges who give false judgments, idols, falsehood and false deities etc. Although these different meanings may be given based on the context of the verse, many scholars have explained that Taghut means Shaitan (satan). In Tafseer Ibn Katheer, Umar's (RA) statements has been narrated that Taghut means Shaitan. After quoting this statement Hafiz Ibn Katheer writes: Umar's statement that Taghut is Shaitan is very sound, for this meaning includes every type of evil that the ignorant people of the Pre-Islamic era of ignorance fell into, such as worshipping idols, referring to them for judgment, and invoking them for victory.
In this regard, many scholars have written that Taghut refers to every such thing that can misguide mankind from the straight path whether it is one's own desires or satan.
And Allah knows best.
