International Women's Day
By Maulana Habeeb

It's International Women's Day. And the world is celebrating the small successes of those feminists who have laboured to ensure women worked equally like men and now to have rights even to marry their own gender. But who will celebrate the victories of wifehood and motherhood and of course sisterhood in the land? A land where no big cameras line up and where the daily toil to make ends meet is just as horrible today as it was during the big Recession.

During the floods so many unsung heroines braved the water and struggled against hunger to ensure the life and dignity of their families were maintained. They even volunteered without a badge or an interview. The honour of theirs is the likes the womanhood of Eve and Fatima, Sara and Mary had reverentially given already to humanity. The bosom that feeds the baby bears the worries. Women hardly rules, so don't worry about the other adage! But chastity isn't a product of hard work but a fruit of living Faith. Otherwise washing machines would be coronated Royal chastity.

But with the institution of family rocking - see more Bills to undermine the function of procreation - and the woman only given a Day with the rest of the year to mourn, it still is a far road to Timbuktu. Oh Yes they too had Queens with maids! Women in Black, mind you, this is no disrespect but we have to stand up as "a healed leader" and not bitter victims. Forgiveness is not about sorry but forgetting the pain and correcting the failed.

The unpaid wages of our beloved homemakers and the unreprieved abused ladies, the fight for decent salaries and respect of bodies - at least flip the rap channel - continue to be the under achievements not often reflected in this Day's Glory. This movement at least needs to listen: If the soul is lost in the battle for freedom and freedom - from what is still a debate - then worse to come is the lost of womanhood. With her absence there is no longer party of pink! Isn't it? When there is love who can argue of inadequacies. When the sun shines, especially in the sun starved zones of geography, who can argue of the unshapely shadows?

So let's be mothers of the soul, again, for God says: "That He may admit the believing men and the believing women to Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein forever, and to expiate from them their sins, and that is with Allah, a supreme success" Q 48:5
