The Descension of Sayyidena Eesa (a.s.)
By Maulana Mohammed Ali Ibn Zubair Ali
The descension of Sayyidena Eesa (A.S.) falls in the category of the major signs of Qiyamah according to the Quraan and the hadeeth.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (R.A.) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, "By Him in whose hands is my soul, the time is near when Ibn Maryam (Eesa A.S.) will descend upon you; he will rule over you with justice; he will break the Cross and kill the pigs; He will end all battles. There will be such an abundance of wealth during his rule that there will be no takers; The value of one Sajda in the eyes of the people will be much greater than the world and what it contains."
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (R.A.) then recited the verse: "There is none among the People of the Book but will believe in him before his death."
Hadhrat Imraan bin Hussain (R.A.) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, "There will always be a group of people on the Path of Truth, overpowering their enemies, until the Order of Allah comes, and Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) descends."
Hadhrat Ibn Abbas (R.A.) narrates that Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) will descend on Mount Afeeq. He will be a just ruler. He will don a cloak and be of medium height. His cheeks will be flat and his hair straight. He will have a spear in his hand and he will kill Dajjal. With the death of Dajjal all battles will come to an end.
There will be such peace and safety in his time that if a person were to be confronted by a lion, it will not attack him, and if a person were to take hold of a snake it will not harm him. There will be an abundance of crops during his time as it used to be during the era of Aadam (Alayhis Salaam). All the inhabitants of the earth will believe in him and they will all follow one religion.
In a lengthy hadith narrated by Hadhrat Nawwas bin Sam'aan (R.A.) from Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) who says, "...Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) will descend on the white Eastern Minaret of Damascus. He will don two saffron coloured sheets. His hands will be resting on the shoulders of two Malai'kah. When he lowers his head it will appear that droplets of water are flowing (from his hair), and when he raises his head it will appear as though there are shiny silverish pearls on his hair.
Prior to the descent of Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) a Muslim army will launch an attack on Hind (India) and Allah will grant them victory. When this army returns to Syria, they will find Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) already descended.
Any Kaafir touched by his breath will not live. His breath will reach as far as the eye can see. He will pursue Dajjal and capture him at Baab Lud (near Jerusalem) where he will then kill him. He will return to those people who were saved from the evil of Dajjal to comfort them, and tell them about their stages in Jannat.
He will then be informed by Allah about the imminent emergence of a nation which cannot be stopped by anyone. Allah will order him to ascend the Mount of Toor with His servants..." (Muslim)
Hadhrat Uthmaan bin Abi Aas (Radiallaahu Anhu) says, "I heard Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) myself saying that when Eesa (A.S.) will descend at the time of Fajr Salaat the Imaam of the Muslims will request him thus, "O Ruhullah, lead the salaat." Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) will decline the offer saying, " The virtue of this Ummah is that they lead each other (in Salaat)."
The Ameer will then lead the Salaat after which Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) will take up his spear and proceed towards Dajjal. On seeing Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) Dajjal will melt just as lead melts in fire. Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) will place his spear on Dajjal's chest and kill him. Dajjal's followers will flee in various directions but will find no place to hide, because even the trees and stones will speak, "O Mu'min a Kaafir is hiding behind me. Kill him". (Ahmad)
Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radiallaahu Anhu) says that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Eesa the son of Maryam will descend to the earth, marry and have children."
Hadhrat Abdullah bin Salaam (Radiallaahu Anhu) (who was a learned Jewish scholar before embracing Islam) says that "it is recorded in the Torah that among the virtues of the final Nabi is that Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) will be buried alongside him. Hadhrat Ayesha (Radiallahu Anha) says, "I said, O Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam), I think that I might remain alive after you, so do permit me to be buried alongside you." Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) replied, "How can I permit such a thing. Here will only be my grave, Abu Bakr's, Umar's and Eesa's (Alayhis Salaam) grave." (Ibn Asakir)
Other Ahadeeth inform us:
After the death of Dajjal, only one religion will remain, Islam.
Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) will abolish Jizya. (Tax)
There will be total peace, even between animals.
The descension of Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) upon the Eastern Minaaret of the Jaame Masjid of Damascus will be an event which will be observed by all present there. He will descend from the Minaaret by means of a ladder. Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) will have a reddish white complexion. He will remain alive on the earth for forty years. When he passes away the Muslims will perform his Janazah salaat. He will don the Ihraam either for Umrah or Haj or for both from Fane Rauha.
